Hair loss is usually genetic or caused by Androgentic Alopecia, this happens to around 40% of both men and women and can be inherited form either of both parents.

In normal hair growth each hair follicle grows in cycles, the growth phase lasts around 2 or more years, during this phase, the hair is actively growing and lengthening, then the hair goes into a resting phase, lasting up to 3 months with hair feeling like its not growing and old hair falling out. Don't worry as this is normal after this the cycle repeats itself. On a healthy scalp on any given day about a 100 new hairs grow and the same number fall out maintaining an even balance of hair across the scalp.

 

Hair loss in  Alopecia, it is caused by a natural hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This is present in all healthy men and women; DHT enters the cells of hair follicles, restricting the growth of healthy hair. Over time the follicle cell becomes weak, and will eventually only produce, short, fine hairs and the results start showing with thinning and balding becoming more visible. In women, the hair loss process often occurs around or after menopause, but it can begin in childhood. In men, hair loss can be at any age. This can happen as young as early teens when the hair line begins to recedes and around the crown area like a monk !. There are certain other  medical conditions that can lead to hair loss including thyroid irregularities, medications, infections, iron deficiency and extreme stress.

Here are a few NOGGI tips to look after your hair.

Rule number 1, TAKE care of your hair, stay away from poor quality shampoo as they contain a load of chemicals, they can not only harm your scalp but they can strip your hair of all the good stuff, also you need minimize the use of hot styling tools, i.e., straighteners, hair dryers, these weaken the proteins in your hair. If at all possible you also need to maintain your stress levels under control, meaning get an adequate amount of sleep, exercise regularly, make sure your diet is really healthy with plenty of  iron, protein, vitamin c, omega 3, biotin and zinc, all these vitamins will help keep your hair and body healthy.

Since your wedding day is planned to be the best day of your life it is only natural you want to look the best you possibly can.

So amongst all of your planning you need to pencil in an appointment with your hair stylist as choosing the hairstyle that suits you best and the special dress of the day cannot be taken more seriously. Your wedding day hairstyle, along with everything else, has to compliment your make up, dress and accessories.  Many brides to be will have a brand new style for their wedding day and you need to know well in advance as you don't want to switch at the last minute. Before you decide on any hairstyle, make sure you have chosen your dress, head dress or veil, work with your accessories, and of course your bridesmaids, and then you can choose the best style for the big day.  A good idea is to have a trial run ( girls only !) to help make your mind up and show up any flaws with your idea. Once this is all planned you can set your appointment and put a tick against one more box you can forget about.

Getting married abroad can have its own problems, in the Caribbean all brides are given a standard French Pleat so if you want something different take a picture of your rehearsal and take it to show the stylist. The best way is the easy way,  so keep it simple for the humid conditions and make it easier on the stylist there.

 A good tip if you have your hair coloured, make sure you have it topped up 2 weeks before your wedding day making sure all the roots are concealed and the week before its good to have a final trim. Also you are advised not to use any hair products for the first time close to the day.  When prepping your hair it's sometimes best NOT to wash your hair on the day but to leave it unwashed for 24 hours to make it a lot easier to style as your hair has had chance to settle down.

Not long ago we discussed the end of terms PROMS and how important it is to have good make up and a stunning hair do.

It's not just about what you wear, your hair style, the cars and the beauty treatments but young people often have skin issues and a lot of my clients ask me about their children and grand children who have skin problems that are causing them undue stress. Are there any skin treatments and skin care products on the market for teenagers ?. …well the short answer is YES.

Skin breakouts are the number one issue among teens.  It not only affects their skin but embarrasses them and lowers self-esteem.

Summer in the sun, recipe for hair damage.

 

 Summer sun is no friend to your hair

Summer time, fresh lemonade, relaxing and sunbathing sounds idyllic BUT not for your hair which will be subjected harmful UV rays and heat from the sun which will break down the protective protein in your hair resulting any natural colours oxidising and giving a brassy hue to your hair.

This results in your hair being stripped of its radiant natural shine and leaving your hair damaged and brittle.

And if you are swimming, in the sea or a pool, you risk damaging your hair even more. As well as the UV rays, salt water can frizzle the follicles and zapps all moisture out of your hair. So here are a few summer hair tips to keep your locks glowing and healthy.

If your hair has a colour added to it be especially careful because the sun’s effects can be unpredictable and send it into a different colour altogether, so when in the sun either wear a hat or use plenty of conditioner or sun spray, items readily available in most chemists and especially Boots, which contain SPF protection for the colour and condition of your hair. To tame any unruly frizz, the main culprit being moisture in the water and humidity in the air, you need to invest in a good serum or finishing spritz.

The very opposite to dry frizzy hair is greasy locks as the heat promotes your sebaceous glands to churn out more of your body’s natural oil. The solution here is a dry shampoo to absorb the hair oil or you could dip a cotton ball into witch hazel (a natural astringent) which will dissolve the oil. Bathe your scalp along your parting and around your hairline and this will help slow down the release of sebum. 

Otherwise sea water is good for you whereas the chlorine in pools is a different problem altogether, even sending your hair green !! The chorine creates a green film over the hair, which is going to be more obvious on lighter shades of hair, so if you are thinking about taking a dip, make sure you do a pre swim prep. Before you take a plunge, wet your hair thoroughly with tap water, this will stop your hair absorbing as much chlorinated water and it’s also a good idea to use and leave in conditioner. If you do end up a shade of green, for a fix, try using a clarifying shampoo. These shampoos have residue removing properties but if that doesn’t work for you can you try the natural remedy of vinegar and water. When swimming avoid using elastic bands with metal seams when putting your hair up instead opt for a soft scrunchy and when putting your hair up make sure it is done loosely as if it is too tight this can cause breakage.

If it’s not one thing it’s being a mother !

As a busy mum it could be that the last thing on your mind is thinking about how your hair is looking today? Can you, should you look your best on the school run ? 

Well the Guys and Gals at Noggis have put our heads together and come up with a few ideas that might help you looking at least half glamorous for that school run or a day at the office.

For longer hair try some loose waves, without the use of the waving wand? Firstly braid your hair the night before after a good shampoo, while your hair is still damp , make sure it is really tightly braided so you don’t get any frizz, then in the morning undo the braid and tease it gently and finish with some hairspray to complete the look, now you’re ready to rock the overnight waves. It’s not old fashioned to use rollers, these are still a great help for the working Mum and ideal when you’re doing your morning running around, feeding the children and getting everyone ready. Just put some rollers in first thing and it will work whilst you’re doing the morning chores, these are certain to give you some added waves and that little bit of added oomph! Straight, one length and blunt, is the choice for the stylists at the various fashion show weekends that have been happening during the past few months. You will have seen it on the red carpet being showcased by several well known celebrities.

This a great classic look, but you need the right tools for the job. The good news is we have just acquired the fabulous and latest innovation styling tongues, the C9 from Cloud 9. This is first automatic dual temperature straightening iron, offering almost instant heat with hottest temperature getting up to 195º! For finer hair or a softer style you reduce the heat down to 165º. The button-less design works by touching the plates together to fire them up so the C9 touch couldn’t be any more simpler to use?

There are a few golden rules to follow before straightening takes place, freshly washed hair must be fully dry and if want a bit of volume why not dry your hair upside down?. Please make sure there is no moisture left in the hair as this could cause damage to hair shafts, creating brittle hair, splitting ends and many other problems. We would always use a heat protection spray and work the product throughout your hair to get a good level of protection. Section off your hair using clips, around a inch in width for the best and most even straight finish. Try not to repeatedly going over the section as that can cause frizz. Complete the treatment with a finishing sprtiz like a light weight shine spray or even a serum and work it though your hair. Only use a few drops as it goes a long way and as with any excess product lashuse an over load van give hair a dull and greasy finish as it will not be absorbed and sit on the surface.

What started out as an end of school dance has now turned into a much more formal affair with students spending a small fortune on wonderful ballroom dresses for the girls and black tie evening attire for the boys. It is now being a major fixture in popular culture for high school students and even junior proms for younger students.

 
 With the prom season on the way it’s not just about what you wear as about how you look and a fantastic hairdo puts the cream on the cake. A modern Barber in the man’s world will give their client not only a good haircut but also tidy them up a bit. My Uncle Geoff who had hairs growing from everywhere was shocked to have ears , nose and his bushy eyebrows also trimmed and came out looking a decade younger. Well for the ladies that is not the easy answer and whilst there are some lucky individuals who were born with extremely tame eyebrows that never grow out of line, there are others, like me, that need a little extra help keeping their eyebrows under control. When it comes to shaping your eyebrows, you want them precise and symmetrical.  It is impossible to do this yourself even with tweezers and a mirror.

The answer is having a professional wax your eyebrows that will give you a perfect shape to compliment your features.  Tweezing can take quite a long time, especially if you have a lot of hair to remove.  This is due to the fact that tweezers are made to remove one hair at a time.  You will also have to spend a few minutes each day combating new hairs that have grown in from the tweezing you did a week earlier.

Whilst 'waxing' your hairs away gives you a cleaner sharper finish and lasts up to 3 weeks.

Its not just women who benefit from nicely shaped eyebrows but men too can get rid of the mono brow where hairs meet in the middle.  It is important not to over shape a man's eyebrows, but a little clean up, like Uncle Geoff, can go a long way to smarten you up and look cleaner and sharper.

In today’s busy and hectic times we cannot always afford the time it takes for a full treatment, usually 55 minutes. 

Sometimes clients want a quick targeted solution to an immediate skin care concern, such as they are worried about a bothersome breakout, dull skin and tired eyes without having a full treatment. That is why we have introduced, in conjunction with cosmetic brand leader Dermalogica,  the Microzone treatments. This is a 20 minute, high-intensity version of the full treatment that takes place in one third of the time !

Microzone treatments are not intended to replace a full Dermalogica Skin treatment.  However, Microzone treatments are ideal for solving specific concerns, clients who are pushed for time, clients who are new to Dermalogica and clients who have never received a professional skin treatment.
